Microbiology

Objectives of the Program

The Microbiology program is motivated by the significance of this subject and its multidisciplinary nature, encompassing various fields such as fundamental research, medicine, environment, industry, and agriculture. This program will cover the fundamental and applied aspects of microbiology to enable students to meet the diverse needs of different sectors of the national economy and research. The objectives of this program are as follows:

1) Understanding the various microorganisms that surround us (bacteria, fungi, algae, viruses) and the exploitation of our microbial flora.

2) Understanding and controlling their activities when they are harmful (microbiological examination of samples and biological fluids, quality control, antibiotic therapy, environmental remediation, etc.).

3) Utilizing and improving their properties when they are beneficial in the pharmaceutical and food industries, environment, and agriculture.

4) Training future professionals in the control and assessment of microbiological pollution along our coastline, as well as quality assurance in the fields of environment, agri-food, medicine, and cosmetics, to meet the continuous quality improvement requirements of our products at the national level.

Targeted Competencies

This program will cover the fundamental and applied aspects of microbiology. The comprehensive theoretical and methodological education will allow students to acquire and reinforce the conceptual and experimental knowledge necessary to understand the microbial world. This education aims to enable students to:

– Master the handling of microorganisms under sterile conditions.

– Identify microorganisms.

– Understand the systematics, metabolism, and genomics of microorganisms.

– Grasp the concepts and approaches of modern microbiology in various fields such as healthcare, agri-food, and environment.

– Comprehend the role of microorganisms in their environment and their potential to meet human needs when beneficial, as well as control and monitor them when harmful.

For students intending to pursue a Master’s degree, the in-depth theoretical and experimental education will provide an understanding of microbiology, microbial biotechnology, and hygiene (quality control, environmental quality monitoring, predictive microbiology, microbiological engineering and genetics, microbiological control techniques). This education includes field trips, practical work, conferences, and seminars related to the field. It will be accompanied by individual study.

Regional and National Employment Opportunities

The competencies acquired through this program allow graduates to directly enter the professional world in the following areas:

1) Pharmaceutical sector for drug control (e.g., SAIDAL), water analysis, and coastal pollution control (SEAL).

2) Supervisory roles in local authorities in the fields of hygiene and safety, fraud detection, and the agri-food sector (e.g., SIM Blida).

3) Hospital or private medical analysis laboratories where graduates can effectively participate in various diagnostic activities, characterization of pathogenic microorganisms, and antimicrobial resistance studies.

4) Research institutions (universities and research centers).

5) Forensic science and customs.

6) Teaching positions in middle and secondary schools.
